The first and most important rule is simple: don’t be a jerk. Sarcasm is fine, as long as it’s not intended to bully inexperienced newcomers. This business is tough enough without being dogpiled on, so instead of being snide to newbies, consider helping them out since you were once as green as they were.

 

Unless otherwise necessary to discuss story, let’s try to keep politics and religion to a minimum. That’s what Facebook and Twitter are for. The country’s polarized enough, so let’s be cool and not add fuel to that fire. 

 

Profanity isn’t forbidden, but just ask yourself if it’s really necessary to express yourself before you deploy it. And yeah, sometimes it is. But probably not as often as you’d think. Please use your best judgment.

 

I hope you enjoy The Writers Room and take advantage of the opportunity to pick up tricks of the trade from other writers, make new friends and network. Have fun — and after that, get writing!
